Merry Christmas 2008

It is the end of 2008 and Swedberg’s Incorporated have shifted their focus once again. This year, the various branches of our family have struck out on bold cultural explorations, both at home and abroad. Strap on your seatbelt and join us as we guide you through the exotic adventures (and important experiences) of our year.

"We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.
The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons."

Speaking of seatbelts, Tim would like to…warn…all peace-loving citizens to CLEAR THE ROAD as he enjoys his newfound freedom as a legally recognized driver. Rather than shipping overseas, Tim has expanded his horizons as a PSEO student, taking courses from four different colleges. His extracurricular activities include listening to music, hanging out with his friends and youth group, rope boarding, and playing video games. This summer, Tim joined funds with his brother (and brains with his father) to build a high-tech gaming computer. To finance his hobbies, Tim works evenings and weekends at a Holiday gas station. (PS - If you’ve ever heard jubilant song drifting from behind the pop bottles as you make a selection, chances are you’ve been serenaded by Tim as he restocks the soda coolers.)

"Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

Keren warmed up her engines in the spring with a two-week jaunt to Chicago, touring as the pianist for the Oak Hills’ choir. Next she flew to Orlando, boarded a sailboat, and cruised to Key West to enjoy a week with her aunt and cousins – she hopes to visit her newest cousin Christopher soon! To cap things off, she soared over the oceans with her father to spend eight days in India. When Keren is unable to experience new places, she jumps at the chance to learn new things. This summer she worked all the various branches of Swedberg operations, while this fall she debuted on the Oak Hills’ volleyball team. Next semester, Keren will shift her attention to Bemidji State University as she works toward her 4-year degree in Business Administration.

"True love welcomes the human being – not a human been or human becoming. Loving a person just as they are is what makes love so wonderful and difficult."

Mark hopped on board the Swedberg travel-mania in his own way by spending the year navigating ideas from every culture and time. Shifting gears from 2007’s job search, he delved into the world of information and explored multiple fields of study, including physics, quantum mechanics, mathematics, cosmology, psychology, metaphysics, philosophy, religion, history, economics, martial arts, physical performance, and nutrition. Best of all, Mark has been learning how to find enjoyment and fulfillment in every moment of his life. While he remains unsure what direction he will take in the future, he is satisfied with what he calls “the best year of his life so far.”

"Anywhere with Jesus; no where without Him."

A former non-world-traveler, 2008 found Marnie’s ministry direction shifting, both live and via the worldwide web. As WomenSpeakers.com continued to grow, version 3.0 became a reality, and, along with it, the capability to welcome Women’s Ministry Leaders and Speakers from around the world. One result of this global expansion has been a partnership with Compassion International. During the exploration phase, Compassion took Dave and Marnie to Peru in October to visit several of their child sponsorship projects and to meet their own sponsored child, five-year-old Yadeerah from Lima. Not given to wanderlust, Marnie continues to hold down the home front as she finds enjoyment in her roles as wife, mother, Soulution’s assistant, and M & K restaurant manager.

"If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened more strength is needed,
but skill will bring success."

Unable to travel the globe full-time, Dave spent most of the year selling imported products and animals (including chinchillas native to the Andes Mountains and Australia’s dragon lizards) and other useful items to local Warroadians at Soulutions. Then, ready for some globe-trotting, Dave flew south with Marnie to Peru and, upon returning home for a few days, flew east with Keren to India for the ASE Leader's Conference. Escaping the Bombay violence by one day, Dave would assure you that the most harrowing part of the trip was the four-hour treks to and from the Hydrabad airport: “The driver would slow for every cow, but played chicken with every Asian truck and bus!”

Astute Travel Observations

- Ever notice how slow drivers are idiots, but anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
- I finally figured out what DELTA stands for: Don’t Expect Legroom on This Airline!
- If you look like your passport photo, you’re too ill to travel.
- If you are going to reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people – you might consider staying at home.

Mark Twain said,
“I have found that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you
like people or hate them than to travel with them.”

Merry Christmas from the Swedbergs!
It is our great joy to travel this life with YOU!
